卐 Sayagata 卐

A pattern of interlocking swastikas, called Manji in Japanese.

It is believed that the term is a contraction of sa-ayagata, a term designating a

'gossamer figured cloth pattern'.

It occurs in ancient India and did not come to Japan until the Tensho era (1573-92)

when Chinese fabrics were imported in large quantity,

It appears also on japanese Mon, in Buddhistic images, on sword furniture and Chinese trousses.
